About Shannon

Shannon Dosemagen (she/her) is an environmental health advocate dedicated to leveraging open systems and technology to build a more just and equitable future. With over 20 years of experience, she has worked with environmental and public health organizations to tackle critical issues such as declining freshwater resources, coastal land loss, and the development of community-led environmental monitoring programs, particularly in fenceline communities adjacent to industrial sites.

Shannon is committed to fostering collaborative spaces that enable communities to engage in science and advocacy. She founded the Open Environmental Data Project in 2020, served as Executive Director until 2024, and now serves as a Senior Fellow. Additionally, she is a co-founder of Public Lab, where she served as Executive Director from 2010 to 2020, and co-founded the Gathering for Open Science Hardware. Shannon serves on several boards, including the National Parks Conservation Association, Code for Science and Society, and the Open Science Hardware Foundation. She has also previously chaired the U.S. EPA National Advisory Council on Environmental Policy and Technology and the Citizen Science Association.

An Ashoka Fellow and senior fellow of the Environmental Leadership Program, Shannon has been recognized as a Fellow by the Harvard Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, the Rita Allen Foundation Civic Science Program, the Claneil Foundation, the Loyola University Environmental Communications Institute, and the Shuttleworth Foundation.
